HAT Program Phases

HAT Program: Phase 1

Pre-Returning Citizens

Phase 1 takes place within the correctional facility.  The target population; inmates currently incarcerated within the faith-based dorms or those housed within a faith program.  Each pre-returning citizen has the opportunity to opt-in or select participation within the HAT program.

Intake information, standardized assessment tools, self-sufficiency evaluations, and program participant acceptance become part of the Phase 1 activities.  In addition each participant will sign a covenant indicating that they understand their responsibility within the program.

During the two hour block, participants are exposed to 10 "topic conversation" modules.  Each module builds upon itself providing insight into the character, personality, morals and values of the individual.  Practical and experiential learning is included.

One of the activities of the program is creating their testimony or life story.  Each inmate begins writing the LIVE book during Phase 1.  LIVE is the acronym  for "Learning, Involvement, Viable, Encouragement."  The LIVE book is presented to the inmate upon release for use during future phases.

As the inmates release date nears, a 24-hour plan is created by the inmate.  Creating the plan offers an opportunity to use the tools acquired through the in-cell sessions. The plan is recorded in Resource Point, the data base used to collect and store information on each program participant.  Resource Point  is a case management tool, providing each transition coach with what they need to successfully guide and walk alongside the Returning Citizen.

Each participant is provided a list of Stations of Hope and will become connected following graduation from the next phase.

Station of Hope

Critical to the success of the program is the Returning Citizen's connection to new a positive community.  This begins immediately upon release with the selection of a  Transition Coach and a Church or House of Worship, known as a Station of Hope.  The transition coach will provide weekly mentoring support for a period of six months.

The HAT Program is an interfaith program and is looking for interested Houses of Worship to participate. Please see the Station of Hope page for additional information.

Post Station of Hope

At the conclusion of six months connection with their transition coach, each Returning Citizen will continue their connection to the Station of Hope for another six months.  It is our desire that each Returning Citizen and his/her family will be well-woven into the fabric of the Station of Hope and have many new support systems in place. This post phase offers a once a month check-in, should the Returning Citizen or their family need additional support.

The Station of Hope Coordinator will make monthly check-ins with the Returning Citizen and family during this time.  Needs as well as progress will be identified, and Resource Point will be updated.  Re-engagement of a mentor coach can be made, if needed.

Completion of all phases of the HAT program are encouraged ensure success.  Reduction in recidivism as well as productive, caring citizens are the goals and outcome expectations for the HAT Program.
